The A to Z of Flawless Acrylic Keychain DIY: 5 Pro Tips for Custom Orders

Hello, this is All That Printing!
We’ve previously shared a lot of technical updates—high-transparency acrylics, glitter materials, and new printing methods. Today, we’re switching gears to talk about something just as vital:
The Art of Ordering.

Even with the same design, the final quality can vary wildly based on your settings. From hobbyists to pro merch sellers, here are 5 essential tips to level up your acrylic keychain game!

1. The White Layer: To Base or Not to Base?

The most common mistake is mismanaging the white underbase. Printing color directly onto clear acrylic makes it look translucent and faint. A "White Layer" is a coat of white ink printed beneath your colors to make them pop.

  • For Vibrancy (Full White): Apply a solid white base behind your character. This creates sharp contrast and makes the colors stand out.
  • For Translucency (No White): Leave the white out intentionally! This creates a stained-glass effect, maximizing the clear, airy feel of the acrylic.
  • Pro Tip: Use a white base for the character but leave the background effects (like magic circles or water ripples) transparent for a stunning 3D look.

2. The 2mm Golden Ratio for Cutting Lines

A "cutting line" is the path the laser follows to cut your acrylic. If it’s too close to the art, you risk cutting into the print; if it’s too far, it looks bulky.

  • Aim for 2-3mm: A 2mm margin from the edge of your design is the visual "sweet spot" for stability and aesthetics.
  • Smooth Curves: Avoid sharp angles. Sharp points are prone to snapping. Smooth, rounded paths ensure both durability and a professional finish.

3. CMYK vs. RGB: Closing the Color Gap

"It looked bright pink on my screen, so why is the physical product darker?" This is the most frequent question we get. The culprit? Color modes.

  • Must be CMYK: Monitors use light (RGB), but printers use ink (CMYK). Always set your project to CMYK mode before you start designing to ensure the colors you see are the colors you get.
  • 300dpi Minimum: Don’t let your small keychain look pixelated. Always check that your canvas resolution is set between 300 and 600dpi.

4. Hardware Defines the "Class" of Your Merch

Many creators overlook the clasp (attachment). However, the hardware is the finishing touch that defines the vibe of your keychain.

  • Color Matching: If your character's main color is blue, try a "blue lobster clasp" instead of standard silver. It immediately gives it a high-end, "official merch" feel.
  • Trendy Shapes: Heart-shaped, star-shaped, or rose gold clasps are currently trending for creators looking to add a premium or "kawaii" touch.

5. It’s Not Finished Until the Film is Off!

At All That Printing, we ship all keychains with a protective film to prevent scratches during transit. Sometimes customers worry about "scratches" on arrival, but those are just on the film!

  • Customer Care: When selling or gifting your items, include a small note saying, "Please remove the protective film." This small detail significantly boosts customer satisfaction.
